The American College of Prosthodontics defines a prosthodontist as a dentist is a specialized expert in restoring natural teeth and creating and placing natural-looking substitutes or prosthetic teeth. In short, they make new smiles look beautiful & natural, and function the way they should.
Prosthodontics is one of only eight dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA). Once becoming a dentist, a prothodontist’s clinical education includes three years of specialized training after dental school in an ADA accredited, advanced dental graduate program.
Prosthodontics is expanding the scope of dentistry by continually providing new techniques and modifying previously established procedures. Some consider the Prosthodontist as the "team captain" of the dental treatment plan. They often lead teams of general dentists, oral surgeons and other health professionals in designing optimal solutions for your dental needs. Prosthodontics of Madison and Dr. Schaefer are committed to staying abreast of these changes and working to be on the forefront of exciting advancements in our specialty. In order to do so, she spends a significant amount of time yearly in professional continuing education courses learning the latest treatment techniques.
What Makes a Prosthodontist Different From a General Dentist?
After completion of undergraduate college, all dentists in the United States earn a four-year dental degree at an ADA accredited dental school. Prosthodontists are specialists who have then trained for at least three more years beyond dental school to become experts in dental reconstruction.
In contrast to general dentists, prosthodontists have completed a multitude of complex dental treatments before they receive their prosthodontics certificate. A prosthodontist focuses specifically on these exacting treatments for the duration of their years of training beyond primary dental school.
